Paint 3D is a creative app that is free to use, and comes already installed on Windows 10.
It is intended to be easy to use, yet professional and effective, enabling you to effortlessly visually combine 2D and 3D tools to produce competent or enjoyable creative pursuits.
The finest aspect is that Paint 3D may be used without any technical expertise. Its user-friendly layout makes it simple to edit pre-existing 3D models using their pre-established 3D library.
Alternatively, you can produce your own original 3D designs once you have gotten the hang of its controls.
While constructing your very own 3D designs, you can manipulate and move them around as you go along, checking them out from every angle.
In other words, you can bring your creations to life, making them three-dimensional.
At first glance, you may accidentally mistake Paint 3D for Paint, the tool that many of us used to play around with during our childhood.
Who remembers opening this old app, drawing a load of squiggly lines, and ‘filling’ each white area with multicolored ‘paint’? 90s kids will remember the good old days, creating meaningless, colorful pieces of art…
Well, Paint 3D includes all the same functions as Paint, so if you want to repeat one of your filling-in-the-blanks creative pieces, you are free to do so!
However, Paint is also still available on Windows 10, so you can simply open that app if that’s all you want to do.
Paint 3D, on the other hand, holds many more functions. The main difference is that, while you can create 2D designs through Paint, you can create 3D designs through Paint 3D (hence the name).
So, while Paint 3D holds all the same functions as Paint, it also contains many more functions that you can play around with. We will delve deeper into these factors in the next section of this guide.
Now that you know the basics of what Paint 3D can do, let’s take a deeper look into what you can create through this app.
If you ever used Paint in the past, you will be familiar with how you create art through these kinds of apps. However, the layout is a little different.
When using Paint, all your brushes and colors will be displayed towards the top of the screen, ready for you to play with.
While using Paint 3D, however, these functions are placed at the side of the screen, with additional functions being placed at the top instead.
By opening Paint 3D, and choosing the ‘New’ option, you will be greeted with a blank, white screen, similar to Paint. On the right side of the screen, you will see your brushes and colors.
At the top of the screen, you will see a handful of options to select from, including ‘2D Shapes’ and ‘3D Shapes’.
Click on ‘3D Shapes’, and you will notice that the brushes on the right side of the screen have changed.
Towards the top, there is an option to ‘Open 3D Library’. By selecting this option, you will be able to view premade 3D objects, and you can search for specific designs by using the search bar.
For example, if you search for ‘Penguins’, you will find 3D designs of penguins.
If you select that option, the 3D design will appear on your screen, and you will be able to edit it.
Alternatively, you can create your own original 3D designs.
You do this similarly that you would ‘paint’ a design using Paint; select ‘3D doodle’ to ‘paint’ your own design, or select ‘3D objects’ to create a 3D shape, such as a cube or a sphere.
From there, you can play around with colors and drawings to create your own 3D creation.
By using 3D doodles or 3D objects, you can create a 3D design of your own imagination.
You will need to group and ungroup separate objects and doodles to attach them to each other; for example, if you are creating a person, you may use a sphere, a cuboid, and four smaller lines for the arms and legs. You will need to group all 6 components together to create a functioning 3D ‘person’.
To bring your design even further to life, you can add stickers to them. In the upper menu, click on the ‘Stickers’ option, and another menu will appear on the left of the screen. From there, you can select stickers to add to your creation.
For example, you can add eye and mouth stickers to your 3D design, giving it a face!
And, unlike grouping your doodles and shapes to attach them to each other, stickers will automatically attach themselves to your design.
The best part of creating a 3D design through Paint 3D is viewing it from every angle. Even while you’re still editing your design, you can manipulate it by moving it around, viewing it from every angle.
By doing this, you can edit and design every aspect of your creation.
For example, if you are creating a 3D model of a cat, you can design it from the front, the back, as well as viewing from a downwards angle and an upwards angle.
You can view your design from all angles, ensuring that the 3D model has been fully completed all around.
While you may have initially thought that Paint 3D was just an updated version of Paint, it is, in many ways, a completely different app.
While you can use all the functions that can be used through Paint, you can create your own 3D models too.
The fact that this app is free to use is so incredibly useful for those wanting to dabble at 3D designing, or even those who would like to try animation, but cannot afford official programs and apps.
If you use Windows 10, you will already have this app installed. If anything that we have talked about interests you, why not give it a try?
