Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNaF) is a creepy indie horror video game in which we will have to survive what initially promised to be a simple job as a security guard. In it we play Mike Schmidt, the new night watchman of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a family restaurant known for its fast food, festive atmosphere and endearing animatronic animals. However, the charm of these cute pets fades quickly when night falls, since they will not only come to life when you least expect it, but they will also do their best to kill you before the end of your shift. As your only allies you will be accompanied by the mysterious calls of the previous guard of the place and the security cameras that will alert you of any suspicious movement. Will you manage to survive these five nights in the pizzeria? Applauded by the media and popularized especially through videos on the YouTube platform, FNaF is a horror and jumpscares classic that takes over from classics of the genre such as Slender: The Eight Pages or its improved version, Slender: The Arrival. Fun, terrifying and surprising, Five Nights at Freddy’s offers you an unforgettable experience that will make you scream with fear with every appearance of Freddy, Chica, Bonny and Foxy. Although the game may seem very simple, it is not at all easy to get out of the surprise attacks of these sinister animatronics. It is not surprising that in a very short time FNaF has become one of the best known and most profitable horror videogame franchises in recent years.
FNaF is a well-known horror video game created by Scott Cawthon that puts us in the shoes of the new security guard of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a family restaurant inspired by the American franchise Chuck E. Cheese. When we arrive at our job, we have no instructions other than those that the previous guard of the restaurant has mysteriously left us recorded. In them we will be informed of the operation of the cameras in the control room, the emergency doors and the lighting system… as well as the four animatronics of the premises, Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy, roam freely at nightfall so that their engines are not blocked. Unfortunately, the worst is yet to come, as we are also told that if the animatronics find a human after midnight, they will kill them and put them in a spare suit of one of the mascots. No doubt these are small details that one should know before accepting a job. With this original and at the same time creepy bet, Five Nights at Freddy’s introduces us to a game in which we will have to overcome each of its five levels surviving our turn from midnight to six in the morning. During these we will be able to watch the animatronics from the different security cameras of the restaurant. Thanks to them we will be able to see if any of the mascots has moved from its position and if it is approaching our location. Since they have many dead spots and the corridors that lead to where we are are very dark, we can turn on the lights to check if they are nearby. If so, we must shield the doors to avoid being brutally murdered. Although things are not easy and if we exhaust the electrical power of the premises we will no longer have access to the surveillance device, lighting and defense system.
With clear reminiscences to the classic Night Trap, FNaF offers us a really challenging experience but with a very simple and for many limited gameplay. Each level has the objective of surviving our night shift from midnight to six in the morning, which in real time is approximately less than five minutes. Already in the security office we can access the various functions of the game by moving the mouse and clicking on them. These are the different security cameras of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and the buttons to turn on and off the lighting of the left and right corridors of the room as well as to activate or deactivate the security doors of the room. Once the level has started, you will have to check the security cameras one by one to locate the animatronics and detect if any of them has been activated to kill us. It is important to remember the location of each of these pets, because while the camera is active recording them, they will not move. Keep in mind that not all of them offer a good image and that one of them is only able to give us the sound of the room. If we suspect that danger is lurking, we can illuminate the corridor to confirm it and seal the access doors. But not everything is so simple, because performing these actions consumes the electricity of the room and if it reaches zero, we will be at the mercy of the creatures in the room.
As its name suggests, Five Nights at Freddy’s has five levels divided into five nights. As we overcome each of them, we will learn a little more about the history of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, its horrifying pets and the tragedy that occurred in that place. Once the story mode is over (about 25 minutes without dying once) we will unlock a sixth night more difficult than the previous ones and if we complete it, we will access a new mode to customize the nights. From this we will be able to adjust the artificial intelligence of all the animatronics, thus creating a terrifying experience à la carte. As for the franchise’s popular minigames, unfortunately they were included in the second part, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, so you won’t find them in this title.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is a perfect option for anyone looking for a videogame with which to spend a night full of anguish, fear and fun. Its jumpscares are still remembered today as some of the most effective in the industry, especially if the player dares to go into this adventure with the lights off and headphones on. Although its gameplay is limited, this doesn’t prevent FNaF from being a challenging and very difficult title. Do you dare to try it?
