Geometry Dash is an action and platform game where the main character is the music. In its philosophy it is reminiscent of games like Rez Infinite, but with simple graphics and a more accessible gameplay. For its creation, RobTop has also been inspired by Super Mario Bros. In its aesthetics it resembles Super Meat Boy, although incorporating visual effects of greater luminosity. The combination of jumping and rhythm tracking makes it very attractive. In addition, along with the main game, it incorporates extra modes that extend the replayability and have made its community very active.
The controls are very simple. It is a running type game, so you don’t have to worry about the direction of the character. The only thing you have to do is click with the mouse to control the character’s jump as he moves relentlessly forward. Each click must be synchronized with the sound of the music. This brings variety to the levels, where you have to pay attention to both the obstacles and enemies as well as the rhythm of the songs.
The gameplay is simple, but it is more varied than it seems. During the 18 available levels, the character transforms in different ways in order to survive the challenges. It takes on the appearance of a spaceship, a spider or a wheel, among others. The transformations are very dynamic. The end of the level is when you reach the finish line without having suffered a fatal fall. The path is full of spikes, explosions, light balls and other aggressive elements. Each screen implies a separate difficulty. Stereo Madness, for example, is easy, while Clubstep is one of the most difficult, and is accessible only when you collect the first secret coins.
There are many challenges. For example, collect over 2000 stars or collect the secret coins to unlock screens. Stars influence the leaderboards. To get to the top you have to finish levels, additional screen packs, use secret codes and get achievements.
Its soundtrack is psychedelic and fast-paced. It uses Rez-like rhythms, with a personal touch that helps juice up its fast-paced gameplay. The composers of its songs include names such as ForeverBound, Step, DJVI and Waterflame. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat the phases to successfully connect the rhythm of these melodies, especially those with a high level of difficulty.
It is very intuitive and full of options. Users can create their own stages in a simple way. It is possible to use the songs of the game itself or incorporate new themes from Newgrounds. There is also the option to edit backgrounds, colors, screen obstacles and to modify the scenery in different ways. Once finished, these levels can be shared online with other players. The only requirement is that they are playable and allow you to find all your coins, which is checked before approval.
Another incentive is to customize the character. By playing you can unlock different colors and icons with which to alter the image and give it a different style. Players who do not manage to advance can train in a practice mode where it is possible to easily try to master the controls.
This is one of the indie games that has caused more impact recently. Its graphic quality stands out thanks to its striking lighting effects, neon lights and all kinds of colors. A constant spectacle is created while the character advances. It is also fun and easy to control. The level editor increases replayability and ensures that it always offers something new. Created by Robert Topala, it is one of the games that best represents the values of an independent production.
