Microsoft Edge is the new free web browser for Windows. After more than 20 years trying with Internet Explorer, Microsoft has finally decided to retire its slow, unstable and insecure browser to replace it definitively with Microsoft Edge, a program with a much more modern look but that above all stands out for its speed, security and multiple configuration options. Microsoft Edge has been received in an excellent way by Windows users, who are used to having to download other web browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera or Brave, have been surprised by the great performance offered by the new official web browser for Windows. Microsoft Edge is also available on Android and iOS mobile devices, MacOS and Linux distributions.
Microsoft Edge is a web browser developed by Microsoft and based on the open source browser Chromium, which is also part of the popular Google Chrome. After many years trying to improve and renew its beloved Internet Explorer, Microsoft has decided to put an end to that stage. In January 2020 the first stable version of Microsoft Edge was released and since then it has become the default web browser in Windows. With a design very similar to Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge offers spectacular performance when visiting your favorite websites, exceeding everyone’s expectations. According to some rankings, it is currently the fastest browser for Windows, something that is really complicated due to the high competition. Its tabbed browsing is very intuitive and offers a much faster loading speed than its predecessor.
The renovation of the default web browser for Windows is total, offering a lot of new features. Like any other browser, Microsoft Edge allows you to easily save and manage your favorite pages in the bookmarks bar. Organizing them is really simple. Microsoft Edge also offers a new tool called “Collections”, where we can save our favorite web content and organize it by folders. This can be very useful when saving ideas around a specific theme, organizing a trip or collecting information for a project. Microsoft Edge’s multi-device synchronization is another of the most outstanding features of the new web browser for Windows. By simply logging in with our Microsoft account all our data, passwords, settings or web history will be automatically synchronized on all devices on which we have installed Microsoft Edge. Undoubtedly a very convenient option for users who use multiple devices in their day to day. If there is something that Edge stands out from the old Internet Explorer is the possibility of installing extensions in a simple way. In the “Edge Add-ons” store we will find thousands of extensions to add a lot of useful and interesting features to our Windows browser. Extensions for communication, development, entertainment, news, productivity, social networks, shopping and a long list of possibilities. Like other browsers, Edge also offers “InPrivate” browsing, a mode in which our browsing activity is not saved (cookies, history, cache…). It also offers a secure password manager, a simple browsing history manager, the ability to take screenshots from the browser itself, share content with your contacts, quick creation of QR codes and many other additional features.
The privacy of user data has been one of Microsoft’s priorities during the development of Edge. In addition to its full integration with Windows security system, it includes Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, which prioritizes web browsing through secure HTTPS certified websites and alerts users when they enter dangerous websites. It also allows for easy deletion of web browsing history and incorporates a secure password manager. For users who are not experts or do not want to worry about security, Microsoft Edge offers three modes of tracking prevention, which modifies the way in which websites collect information about our online activity. We can choose between basic, balanced (recommended) and strict prevention. Each user can choose their favorite mode from the settings menu. Microsoft Edge also includes a child mode specially designed to protect the online safety of children.
As with Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge is a completely free web browser for all users who have installed any of the supported versions of Windows. This browser is also totally free in the versions available for other operating systems and/or devices. Microsoft Edge will be installed by default in the new versions of Windows.
Microsoft Edge has been released as the main browser for Windows 10, although it is also compatible with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. It is also the main web browser of Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 11. At the moment Microsoft Edge is not compatible with Windows XP, and considering that support for this operating system is no longer offered, it does not seem that it can be in the near future.
Microsoft Edge is undoubtedly the web browser that Windows users have been waiting for so many years. It offers really fast, stable and secure web browsing. In addition, it takes into account the privacy of users, who can easily take full control of their data. Thanks to its huge extension store we can add functionalities of all kinds to improve our user experience. In short, Microsoft Edge is a complete software that can be classified as one of the best web browsers of the moment.
