Google Meet is a video calling software originally developed for companies with access to G Suite, but which has since been opened up to all users. It is the successor app to Hangouts and is the tool recommended by Google’s own management to participate in stable and quality video calls. To use Google Meet you need to install its app and have a Google account. Finding out how Google Meet works is not complicated, since it is possible to start video calls quickly even from Gmail. The host of the call can invite between 100-250 people, depending on the contracted version, since Google Meet is free in its basic version.
The differences between Google Meet and Hangouts have increased over time. The participant limit for video calls is much lower in Hangouts, at only 25 people. In addition, Google Meet can be downloaded cross-platform and is more versatile, allowing access with more devices, as well as sending messages from the app. Another alternative to Google Meet is Zoom, which it surpasses in a feature it also brings over Hangouts: instant access. To participate in a Google Meet video call online, it is only necessary to follow a personalized link, without using browser extensions or invitations. In addition, compared to its competitors, Google Meet offers real-time captioning.
To use the Google Meet grid mode, there is no need to download an extension. This mode, which makes it possible to see 49 people on the screen simultaneously, is activated by selecting “Tile” from the “Change Layout” menu in the software options.
The use of Google Meet and its app is free in the basic version. This gives access to video calls for a maximum of one hour with a limit of 100 participants. However, it is one of the most comprehensive services in terms of its free availability. It includes access from web browsers and applications, invitations to external users, screen sharing mode or different designs with customization. If you’re wondering whether Google Meet is secure, it should be added that the free version is protected with encryption, two-step verification and other protection options that increase confidence in the program. Professional users can access alternative versions through Google Workspace Essentials and Google Workspace Enterprise subscriptions.
