Discord’s central feature is the ability to create different servers. Upon downloading it and creating an account, you’ll be able to navigate to the ‘+’ symbol at the top of the screen and create your own server right away.
You can give it a unique name and open it up. From here you’ll be able to customize your server to your liking.
Discord servers consist of a few basic ‘rooms’ you’re able to navigate through—chat and voice. Chat rooms are very similar to other social media apps, places where any members of your server can drop messages and other pieces of media.
The typical Discord server will have a few different versions of these chat rooms, usually each for a different purpose. Voice rooms allow you to host a number of members and engage in voice conversations.
Another thing that we need to mention about Discord’s chat room capabilities is their video/streaming capabilities. You’re able to easily turn on your video to broadcast to the voice room in question, and you’ll also be able to easily share your screen.
This isn’t a feature you’ll get with the mobile app, but you can still watch along when somebody else is streaming from their PC.
It’s worth noting that Discord is completely free to download and use. This is one of the main reasons why gamers have chosen it as their home of choice. It allows you to easily set up a server and host a large number of members for no cost.
They do however offer Discord Nitro, which is a premium service that allows you to ‘boost’ servers for added stability and to increase the file capacity of your server.
You can download Discord on Android and iOS, and it’s very easy to get started with it. All you need to do is to navigate to the Google Play or Apple App store and search for it in the top bar.
From here, you can tap to download and you’ll soon find it installed on your mobile device.
You do have to create an account to use Discord, but this is a simple process that doesn’t ask for much personal information. From here, you can get started joining a server that somebody else has created, or quickly create your own!
If you’re in a gaming or online community, you might be trying to find the right voice communication platform for you. Although Discord is the king of VOIP apps, you might be wondering what some of the downsides are.
In this section, we’re going to be breaking down the pros and cons of Discord to help you decide.
Free To Use: It’s amazing how almost all of the features of Discord are completely free to use. Many users enjoy Discord without ever paying a penny! There are paid features, but this is completely optional for the most part.
Channel Selection: In Discord servers, you’re able to create specific channels for voice or chat communication. This can be very helpful if you’re part of a large community that needs a lot of resources or places to play and chat!
Discord Community: Discord is a very popular app, and it’s commonly used by all kinds of gamers and developers.
Many indie game devs have chosen it as the place to build their communities, so if you’re interested in supporting smaller game creators, this can be an amazing place to get involved!
Screen and Video Sharing: We are very impressed with the sharing capabilities of Discord. It’s very easy to share your screen or broadcast video to your server! Considering this is free, the upload speed is impressive.
Reliable Servers: Sometimes Discord servers will go down, but for the most part you’re going to be experiencing an impressive connection. You can always pay to ‘boost’ your servers for added stability.
Memory: One thing to note is that Discord does take up quite a bit of memory. This is much less noticeable on the mobile app, but you should know that it can interrupt your device if you’re using a lot of different apps at the same time!
File Sizes: Without Discord Nitro, you won’t be able to drop large files into its chat rooms. This can be frustrating when trying to share large video files or other kinds of media.
However, you can get over this limitation by investing in Discord Nitro, which completely removes this cap!
